Prior to a visit to Japan and Canada by the UK Head of Space Command, UKDSC were asked to undertake analysis on the space capabilities in each country to identify potential opportunities for collaboration. Our work demonstrated:
- The current capabilities mapped across Space priorities in each country
- The current Space partnerships & international collaboration activities
- The domestic capacity for Space including economic data & Supply Chain security
- Published ambitions & country attitude towards either in-house development or foreign procurement
Our work led directly to the signing of an MOU at DSEI Japan.
‘The data produced by UKDSC proved invaluable, affording a meaningful, credible discussion with both nations. I was particularly interested in establishing a space relationship with Japan, to augment the successes of the FCAS/GCAP effort. Many experts from across the Department advised me that this was not possible, but it would take 2-3 years to build such a foundation. UKDSC’s preparatory work allowed me to accelerate this process. This has subsequently led to the signing of a formal space MoU between UK Space Command and the JASDF Space Operations Centre, and the UK and Japan Terms of Reference outlining future space cooperation, signed at theis year’s DSEI in Japan. UKDSC’s initial efforts helped underpin these successes. Excellent work, which demonstrates the worth of UKDSC.’ Air Marshall Harv Smyth CB DFC OBE RAF, Air and Space Commander.
