On Wednesday 15th November 2022, the Uk Ministry of Defence announced that it had selected BAE Systems as the preferred bidder to build support ships for the Royal Navy.
This order of 5 more ships will add to the 3 that are already being built up in Scotland (HMS Glasgow, HMS Belfast, and HMS Cardiff). These two batches will be replacing the majority of the Type 23 warships.
We at the UKDSC are delighted that this not only fulfills the long-term government commitment to field a fleet of 8 ASW ships, but also delivers the ambitions laid out in the National Shipbuilding Strategy Refresh which was published earlier this year. The investment reinforces support to the UK defence industry and looks to reinvigorate the UK’s maritime capability.
